How Batteries Work

The following is an overview of how alkaline batteries work. Alkaline batteries are a complex product that involve chemistry and electricity. The electrochemical process enables your electronic devices to work without the need for a cord attached to a power outlet. This provides people mobility and freedom to move about without being tethered to a wall. What is a Battery?

The product we call a battery is a device that converts chemical energy into a low-voltage electrical energy source. Because the power supply is safe and mobile, batteries are widely used in all aspects of daily life and in a wide variety of business applications.  

Generally speaking, batteries consist of four primary components, which includes an electrode, electrolyte, separator, and outer casing. The electrode is at the core of the battery, which is generally composed of an active material and a conductive framework. The active material is a component that releases electrical energy through chemical changes, and the conductive framework mainly plays the role of conducting electrons and supporting the active material. The electrodes in the battery are further divided into positive and negative electrodes. The end marked (+) on the battery is the positive pole, and the end marked (-) on the battery is the negative pole.

The Technical Stuff

Technically speaking, using the battery is actually part of the discharge process. When the battery is discharged, the active material of the negative electrode undergoes an oxidation reaction to provide electrons to the outside. Meanwhile, the active material of the positive electrode undergoes a reduction reaction to receive electrons from the external circuit, and the current flows from the positive electrode to the negative electrode through the external circuit. The electrolyte solution is an ionic conductor. The directional movement of ions between the positive and negative electrodes inside the battery conducts electricity. A “cation” flows to the positive electrode, and an “anion” flows to the negative electrode. The entire battery forms a complete discharge system composed of the electronic system of the external circuit and the ionic system of the electrolyte, thereby generating electricity and power.

For the most part, the safest and most readily available batteries are zinc-manganese batteries. Inside zinc-manganese batteries, the negative active material is metal zinc and the positive active material is manganese dioxide.
